As a small animal veterinary surgeon, I’ve certainly noticed more and more pet owners struggling to know whether their selected policy gives adequate cover once they’ve purchased it over the past few years. As pet insurance is a financial product, it comes under the regulation of the Financial Conduct Authority. In temperate climates, as the day-length shortens in autumn, certain species of tortoise will instinctively reduce or halt their food intake in preparation for hibernation. In years gone by, to hibernate a tortoise was relatively risky with large numbers dying, mainly due to freezing temperatures or dehydration. National Black Cat Day, taking place on 27 October 2017, is a time to recognise and reflect on the beautiful black cats brightening our lives and raise awareness of those awaiting a loving home. In the UK, black cats are considered to be lucky, whilst in Scotland seeing a black cat appear on your doorstep is a symbol of prosperity.
Bonfire Night in the UK is a dreaded time of year for the nation’s pets and their owners. It is estimated that 45 percent of dogs in the UK show signs of fear when they hear fireworks. As autumn draws in, it’s nearly that dreaded time of year again for the animals of the United Kingdom, Bonfire Night. To you and me, the 5th November celebrates the failure of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 to blow up the Houses of Parliament. This morning the sun is shining, the sky is blue and the traffic lights seem to all be on green as I make my way to Two By Two Veterinary Centre. I’m smiling to myself thinking that today is the day I can make a little girl supremely happy as her beloved cat who went missing three weeks ago is reunited with her and the family due to the presence of a microchip implant.
